He's a Buck He Is-The Answer to the Census Name

Here is a more complete image that was the center of yesterday's post "What Is That Name?"

It's pretty clear from a more complete picture that the "ham" belongs to the name above and that the enumerator simply could not fit "Cunningham" on the line above.


Ancestry.com originally indexed it as Beckham--but a correction has been posted.



As originally indexed, a wildcard search for Buck* would have located the reference, but a Soundex search would not have located it. The "right" name is "Buck," which makes the point that even though a name isn't supposed to have more letters, that it easily can and that wildcard searches may be helpful even when you think otherwise.
