Michael John Neill's genealogy website. Things that cross my path, general research suggestions, and whatever else ...with a little bit of attitude. I don't post "news" just to post it, never post a press release (edited or otherwise), don't feign excitement, and pretty much say what I think.

U S City Directories at Ancestry.com
Ancestry.com says it is new, but I'm not certain how new the U. S. City Directory collection actually is. The search may have been changed or a few cities/locations might have been added. An admittedly quick scan of the locations and places included seemed to indicate that this database is the directories that were uploaded several years ago in an attempt to make up for the lack of the 1890 census.
The city directories can be searched here.
I would be interested to see if others think this is the same set of data that was already on Ancestry.com.

Based on the few cities I looked at yesterday... there are many more years and the index is linked to actual images... the old index database is out there as well.. this new stuff appears to be OCR based.

Melissa,
Thanks for your comment. You are correct. My sampling apparently was not as random as I thought.
In the past month Ancestry has added over 1000 directories to their site, adding 50 million names to their database. We'll be posting a larger blog entry about it shortly.
